Chroma: Yellow

Bild
Yellow excites a warm and agreeable impression. If you look through a yellow glass at a landscape the eye is gladdened. In many of the shots I took at Dungeness for THE GARDEN I used a yellow sky filter on my Super 8. It produced autumnal effects. A golden colour appears when what is yellow and sunny gleams. The nimbus of the saints, haloes and auras. These are the yellows of hope. Yellow is a combination of red and green light. There are no yellow receptors in the eye. If you mix paints you will be unable to mix yellow, though the oil you use is golden. Yellow sands. Yellow streak. These are the pigments: The modern yellows: barium yellow, lemon yellow...stable in light and invented in the early nineteenth century. Cadmium yellow, sulphur and selenium. The modern production of cadmium pigments began during the First World War. Chrome yellow. Lead chromate darkens on ageing. The yellow of turmeric sunsets.   Derek Jarman, Chroma

Pearl fishers in azure seas.... Derek Jarman

Red memory. The first Adam formed by god from the red soil was a red man. Was it the dark red soil of the nile flood that gave its name to egypt, the land of khem? The arabs gave us the word al-kimiya , out of which grew our scientific chemistry. Lost in the scientific labyrinth we pray for Ariadne to rescue us with a red thread.  Derek Jarman: Chroma

On seeing red

Bild
To begin teaching someone: 'that looks red' makes no sense, for he must say that spontaneously, once he has learned what red means, ie learnt the technique of using that word. For if someone has mastered the use of what looks red - or indeed what looks red to me - he must also be capable of answering the question, 'and what is red like?' and 'what does something look like when it turns red?'  Wittgenstein: Remarks on colour (cited by Derek Jarman, Chroma - a book of colours)

The doors of perception

If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would be seen as it is. Derek Jarman, Chroma If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite. William Blake
